Man on Wire

Man on Wire

P and I just saw this enthralling doco - it really has everything - quirky characters, beautiful photography, music by Michael Nyman and Petit himself is as inspirational as he is 'crazy'.... It has been mentioned to me a few times lately that women need to challenge themselves physically more (as if giving birth to children isn't enough, hey Lisa?) Boys are encouraged as children to challenge themselves physically in lots of ways and girls generally don't .... and for that reason in one way I could not relate to this man at all....Fear and a lack of reverence for human life are things that have crossed my mind when I hear of people climbing Everest... but there was something so beautiful about this man walking amongst the clouds....

Australian Idol

I guiltily admit to watching Australian Idol ever since it started - before Guy Sebastian was a household name.... And I've got to say (even though they are all males) the final four this year are so GOOD! I believe Wes has been a contender from the start - but the other 3 have now really stepped up to the mark.... so it should be an interesting finale....

The Farm - Cup Weekend 08

Donna the cow and Romy

Yes, we got 'up close and personal' with the animals (as always....) this weekend. We went to our favourite farm Brockspur Eco Farm up past Yarra Glen. It's about the 4th time we've been as a family and what I love about that is - the feeling of familiarity, getting to know the hosts Ed and Amanda and see what they have done from year to year... how the goats that were babies last year are now the 'old girls' and there are new babies to take their place - the wonderful circle of life is so obvious here... Even the horses seem to know us a little better now....

Funny films

I am compiling a list of funny films - please put your favourite in my comments.... We watched 'Revenge of the Pink Panther' last night.... and I didn't find it funny... We need to watch MORE funny films....

Lotus from Colleen

Just after I put up the lotus painting, my dear friend Col sent me this beautiful photo from Thailand - certainly a theme going on....

Zen Tarot

Whatever the space you're in right now--sleepy and depressed, or roaring and rebellious--be aware that it will evolve into something new if you allow it. It is a time of growth and change.

Occasionally I go to Osho Zen Tarot website and the above quote is part of what it said yesterday. Today's card is 'Breakthrough' and here is a little part of it....(quite uncanny I think....)

All of us occasionally reach a point when "enough is enough." At such times it seems we must do something, anything, even if it later turns out to be a mistake, to throw off the burdens and restrictions that are limiting us. If we don't, they threaten to suffocate and cripple our very life energy itself.

The above beautiful painting from Thailand is from this website...

My pledge....

Maybe if I make it public I will be able to stick to this pledge -
I MUST NOT DRINK COFFEE (I always feel bad)
I MUST NOT EAT SWEET, FLOURY THINGS (big, sore tummy...)
I WILL TRY A PIECE OF FRUIT INSTEAD OF CHOCOLATE
I WILL TRY AND GET TO THE GYM 3 TIMES A WEEK
I WILL TRY AND MEDITATE....
(that'll do for now.... I will try and change the world next week....)

Dinners that work...

I just have to make note of 2 dinners that worked with my kids (5 & 8) which I didn't expect to (and remember for future reference....)
Marinated tofu with stir fry vegies and rice vermicelli
Corned beef with sweet potato mash (cooked with orange juice) and green beans - I put onion and balsamic vinegar with ours and the flavours all together were really good.... mmm, thinking about some different meals....

What a weekend....!!!

What a big weekend we've had for the past THREE days.... Friday was Romy's 5th birthday so we went to the Zoo for th day - beautiful weather, close ups of some of the animals (photos when I can get this 'great' Mac to work....my little dig there....) We've had cake and 'happy birthday' 3 times with different family and friends - Romy had a great time and got lots of his beloved bionicles..... P and I went to the kinder fundraiser - 80's night - which was fun! I dressed up as Madonna and had to do lots of research on YouTube.... Nim loved watching the clips with me (and then asks me 'what's a virgin?' My answer - 'a lady that hasn't had babies yet.') P did the big Bay bike ride - and we're all very proud of him for doing it so well. We topped it all off yesterday with a bbq at Ricketts Point with our dear friends.... Phew...back to work for a rest....sure....

A holiday pic

This is one of my favourite pics from one of my favourite experiences from our holiday.... The dolphins at Seaworld were so beautiful - I did cry a bit watching them.... probably for a whole lot of reasons (that I won't go into now).... Thanks to the people who pop back here to read my blog - I know it's been a long time between posts - but I hope to be a little more regular in my updates soon....
I also want to recommend a book I read on the holiday - 'The Lovely Bones' by Alice Sebold - if you can get through the trauma of the first chapter.... you will find it worth it! x

New skirt

The completion of this skirt on Friday night gave me so much joy - for new and good reasons -
- it's the first time I felt confident enough to ignore (most) of the pattern (no offence Amy Butler - by I didn't want to do lining...)
- I actually fitted the skirt on myself - simple thing I know but I've 'trusted the pattern' too much in the past...
- I really liked the unfinished, fraying edges, deconstructed feel to it (would like to give up being 'precious' in all areas of my life!)

Workshop @ Lumina with Penny O'Neill

I'm so glad I decided to do this workshop yesterday with dear friend S. It was so great to get a different perspective on recycling materials (although I was just getting used to cutting up jumpers!) and how you can combine materials - thanks to the incredible inspiration and encouragement from the 'fabulous Penny O'Neill'... I also love that she admits she's 64 - but looks so much younger because she isn't afraid to express herself through her clothes and hair.... There is always a lovely representation of women at these things that inspires me - women who love making things, looking at colour and texture and combining it in such individual ways - and they are stylish women - no matter their age....
Pictures above - Left - headband of Penny's I just had to have! My effort on the right (needs a little tweaking...)
Below is the scarf that needs completing...

More scarves....

These were fun to make from go to wo....Our holiday visit to Savers was very fruitful. I got some interesting jumpers there and cut them up to make these... Lumina Gallery took a few bangles of mine a couple of weeks ago - very exciting - and now I hope they might take some of these...

I had my first day off as part of my part time load today and it was really fun - visiting and catching up with friends - it's going to be my special day - I don't want to fill it with chores or busyness if I can help it. I would kind of like to try this 'portrait every day for 100 days' that I found on YouTube, and remembered that I used to do Self Portrait Challenge - maybe I will again...

Just words

I thought these hols I would try and post every day....HUH! The only time I can get ON the computer is when P isn't here and then I come up against troubles and he isn't here to help. New computer - new problems.... So I can't post a piccie today as much as I'd like to - but I can point you to a couple of websites that profile amazing craftspeople I met at Rose St Market on the weekend. I've been meaning to buy a KLEI pendant for so long and finally did. It's a lovely blue and white single pendant - you prob have to scroll down a lot to find it.... and I bought an exquisite felt brooch from Brid Bird - you can see some of her stuff at this etsy site - but I think the felt ones are quite new. Mine is imbued with the energy of Euan McGregor! She's a lovely, lively Irish girl with a story to tell!!!! Actually try her Blogspot which has some pics of the felt brooches....

Dolly no 1 - made!

So out of the messy pile of fabric we had yesterday - a dolly was born - Blossom (sitting next to older dolly Mia on the left). There's a few more variations to come! Oh! I forgot to say that this is the Miss Buttons pattern from Sew Your Own.

Books -

The Time Traveler's Wife
By Audrey Niffenegger

I only ever put a book up here if it is exceptional - one that stands apart from all the books read over the years - The Time Traveler's Wife is one of those books. Moments are captured with exquisite observation and references to bands such as The Pixies and Violent Femmes evoke a time many of us have just experienced. It's a poignant love story; and a strange concept made REAL. Thanks Collee for such a great gift. READ IT.

Music -

So Frenchy, So Chic

It's not often I hear a song on the radio (Triple R) and want to pull the car over and dance on the side of the road. When I heard 'Ta Douleur' by Camille I didn't actually do that...but I did rush out and buy "So Frenchy, So Chic" which is the unofficial soundtrack to this year's French Film Festival. Put your beret on, buy a baguette and pretend you're there...

Nimue's drawings always make me smile.

Film -

Spanglish

I havent seen a film I've liked this much for ages. Advertised as a romantic comedy - it was so much more for me. The characters were brilliantly played by people I didn't expect to like such as Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni. I felt the relationships were real and explored on different levels - husband, wife, mother, daughter etc. I cried at the end when the daughter admitted to wanting to be like her mum.

Books -

Ish
By Peter A. Reynolds

Since having children I have become obsessed with beautiful kid's books. This one spoke to me in the shop. This one must be dedicated to all those creative souls who had their hearts crushed by a harsh critic. For my own daughter Nimue I hoped it would hold a message of not being so hard on herself. What a beauty for all the poets and artists and dreamers - adults and children alike.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in The Night-Time
By Mark Haddon

If the reviews hadn't got me - then the front cover surely did. I loved that this book took my head into new perspectives on life. I cried when the boy Christopher explained how his parents had to show him affection by putting their hand up, that he didn't want to be touched! I once taught a girl with Asperger's Syndrome and it made me understand so much more about her. I wish I was as good at maths as this character....

Northern Lights
By Philip Pullman

My friend C recommended this trilogy as a great follow-up for those of us who enjoyed Harry Potter. More intellectual and philosophical than Harry Potter, the first book really captured my imagination with it's witches, gyptians and armoured bears! This is one to get you through a long, cold winter.
